Gotta love that band, just for it’s name. Alas, I love all their songs too. Perl Jam rules the roost of my Nineties listening collection.

Music buff, me? Not hardly any longer. I used to be quite good, naming most any song after only hearing the first couple of notes. I really could have been a contender on “Name that tune” in the 80’s. Now adays though there’s just too much new stuff out… most of which I have no interest in at all… and so, no, no longer is Dave a music buff.

My mother told me the same thing. If I wanted to be happy, I should stop listening to all the depressing stuff I do. (she was refering to the AM Conservative talk show hosts.) My Fiance said that if I wanted to be happy I should try not to think so hard on the issues of the world. I’ll tell you what I told them. I’m depressed because the world sucks. No amount of hiding behind flighty music and rose gardens is going to make the world any better. I’m not depressed by my actions, but by my lack of actions. Hiding is just one more way not to do anything about the problem. It’s not a solution, it’s the cause.

So… in the end, I listen to depressing music (some say depressing) because it shows me that other people are depressed too. It shows me that there are others who care, and feel, like me, helpless in the face of it all. The depressing music is one of the only things that make me happy.

Blessed be brother Flashers
Keep on rockin

I watched both the Brit Awards and the BAFTAs recently, and in both of them, people were standing up and saying “this war is a bad thing, don’t do it.” Ms Dynamite even altered the words of Geaoge Michael’s “Faith” (with him) to reflect her anti-war opinions…
