Cerf retiring feels like an “end of an era” thing mostly because TCP/IP is the kind of boring plumbing that only gets noticed when it _doesn’t_ work.
The Meta glasses bit is what made me roll my eyes though — paying a monthly fee to unlock “on-device” features on hardware you already bought is such a bleak direction for everything.

Cerf retiring feels like a little alarm bell for “we’re living on assumptions someone else made in the 70s.” The early internet stuff was intentionally dull and sturdy, and we’ve spent the last decade bolting on business models and “engagement” until it’s all a bit… twitchy.
I’d skip the [kirupa.com](http://kirupa.com) detour here and just say the quiet part: I miss when the core plumbing didn’t come with a subscription tier and a rate limit. Meta paywalling features on hardware you already bought is exactly the kind of thing that would’ve sounded like a parody headline in 2005.
