hey guys i was just wondering something
i have checked all the specs and this is another thing im planning to buy
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz OEM Processor
ok i know my gfx card and my NEW motherboard will work with it i was just wondering thou cuz i have a p3 right now with windows xp right
so i was just wondering
i seen somthing called windows xp 64?
is this needed or no is that for dual core?
would the AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0GHz OEM Processor
still work with windows xp pro or home?

64bit Processors do work with 64bit OS’s. I know i found it amazing myself… lols.
[whisper]You dont have to have a 64bit OS if you have a 64bit processor if you were wondering. Some new 64bit games wont work with that processor though.[/whisper]

64-bit processors still work with the 32-bit versions of Windows, though you won’t be able to use the ‘extra’ 32-bits that your processor has available. It would essentially pretend that you have a 32-bit processor in that case.

And,
Not that I’m aware of, there arn’t enough 64bit apps.

My work PC is on AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.20 Ghz.
Krilnon is right, you can run a 32-bit version of Windows but the processor would only use 32-bits of its supposed 64.
Im running the 64 bit version of Windows XP and yes it is fast.
Though too bad all the programs installed on it are all 32 bit versions. I cant fully experience the full potential of the processor.

Yes, with Windows XP 64-bit Edition you wont get any noticable performance boost IMO. All current apps are 32-bit, including games, so the main benefit will be the actual clock speed difference.

so then if its not using al 64 bits for gaming would it make sense to
buy a intel celeron p4 3.0 ghz instead of the amd 64 3000+ 2.0 ghz??
which is better for gagming

i would get the 64. There may not be alot of support for 64-bit right now, but in the future, games will probably start using this architecture.

…sry. Posting kinda early/ still out of it.
How did i answer it wrong… a AMD 2ghz is faster(I will go check on specifics), than a p3 at 1ghz.
//edit, i just searched around couldnt find any free 64bit OS’s (found a few cheap ones for testing programs.).

i knew the amd 2 ghz was faster then a p3 but i wasnt sure if it was faster on only 32 pins thats what i was really asking 🙂

I have an AMD Athlon X2 3800, Dual core and 64 bit. I ran XP x64 for a while, till I figured out there wern’t drivers for it for some stuff I wanted (grrrr ATi!!!) and it was a little buggy, so I am back to 32bit windows. Wont run 64 bit apps in 64bit modes, but I am ok with that.

lol, nice find. I like Linux, dont use it myself but its less anoying than Windows. I hope their 64 bit can accept 32bit drivers…stupid XP 64…

instead of AMD 64 you should try out Pentium D processors, they’re the closest to AMD 64.
Just a question, I haven’t seen many AMD + INTEL motherboards out there, but you have one? Please give more info, thanks!

Well, if the drivers are open source, which they should be… 🙂
