Understanding the difference between null and undefined is one of those things that seems minor until you hit a bug because of it.

It’s like an empty room versus a room that was never built.

```auto
let myVariable; // undefined - room never built
let anotherVariable = null; // null - empty room

```

The analogy is quite helpful for intuition. The interesting question, for me, is how many systems actually _distinguish_ between the two states in a meaningful way beyond type checking.

Okay so the distinction matters a lot for frontend stuff, especially when you’re dealing with API responses where a missing key (undefined) is different from a key that’s explicitly null. like, one means “this data doesn’t exist” and the other means "this data exists but it’s empty. "

That’s a really good way to put it. I always explain it to my students like `undefined` is like a blank spot on a form you haven’t touched yet, and `null` is when you actually wrote “N/A” in that spot.
