# Convenience can quietly eat basic competence

I keep wondering where people draw the line between saving time and letting a skill rust. Some automation is obviously fine, but there’s a point where nobody on the team can do the thing by hand anymore.

Has anyone found a good rule for that, or do you just accept the tradeoff and hope it never matters?

I draw the line at “can we debug it when the magic breaks? ” If the automated path fails and nobody can even describe the manual steps, that’s a liability.
