what are your views on the death penalty?

i think that it is not needed, and shouldnt go on, and this is why. I view the death penalty as a easy was out, Becasue what is worse, dying or living in horriable conditions with a guy named leo?😏

I used to be for the death penalty.

Then I found out that it costs more to put a prisoner on death row, than it was to imprison him for life.

Now, I no longer support the death penalty. In my opinion, it has very little effect on the persons who commit the crimes.

You guys ever heard of H Unit in Oklahoma? Thats what i think is needed. Its all underground so the prisoners never see a sunset or sunrise, never see the landscape again. they are in their cells for 23 hours of the day. Its a living hell. What does death do? Nothing. Why? Well look at it this way, when you put a murder to death, what does that teach him? But when you put a murder to jail for 2 life sentences when he is 20 he has all his life, which could be to 80 or 90, to think about what he did to get there, and to live with his guilt and sorrow. Capital punishment does not need to go on for the same reason as phil said. Its much outdated and really, it lets the prisoners ‘off’.

Mistakes happen yes. But for the most part I am for the death penalty. It has proven to be relitivly effetive in most states that have taken it on. With the exception of Cali.

Given the circumstances that is. Women that drown five of her own children in a row need to be removed from this planet. Regardless of the cost. I am not a man of faith so it is easier for me to judge I guess. Others would prefer to keep them out of the public and let the man upstairs do the judging. Thats why this is such a heated debate I guess.

If I accidently ran someone over on a rainy night and killed them. (With no alcohol or drugs involved) I think that would not warrent death by your peers.

But phil, i think that you need to break them and then rebuild them to make them leave their old habbits. its jsut something that must be done. Dont get me wrong, i dont think they should be beaten, but i think they should be striped down of all pride then rebuilt with bnew morals.

Yeah but Phil… If we were to make the prison system alot cleaner and more on the safer side… Then there is our tax dollars going into making these criminals lead better lives in prison…

I for one have mixed feelings about the death penalty… Personally if someone can shoot a guy in the head and take away that man’s life and have no guilt about doing it… I’m pretty sure that man knows what he is getting himself into.

There are alot of people who would rather sit in a prison and not have to endure the hardships of life on the outside. I use to work with an inmate on work release and he said that life in a prison wasn’t that bad at all. He would work out most of the time and sit there and come up with new ideas for things and all that kind-a stuff… He was like… “The food isn’t desirable… But it’s better than McDonalds!” _lol_…

So… I was thinking about this… here is some guy living a better life than me right now. Doesn’t have to worry about the hardships of bill paying and other stressful facts… And all because he was drinking and driving too many times.

Hmm… Just my feelings 🙂 Back to the main topic though… Detah penalty… Mixed opinions really… 🙂

can’t compare diff cultures like that Phil…

same with the gun laws…

too much history to try to erase… won’t happen. Personally, I think the image of being raped by a guy named Bubba scares more people straight than the death penalty, but that is me…

I am indifferent, but I think the death penalty is an easy way out for many of the criminals who would not mind being executed. People who commit horrible crimes such as drowning 5 children are probably not afraid of the consequences of death.

Instead of giving them luxuries that many people around the world would dream to have, make the inmates do something painful such as break rocks day-in and day-out. While I am not entirely for the excessively cruel punishments employed in China, the Middle East, North Korea, etc. for prisoners, I believe potential criminals should be afraid of prisons.

Prison is not a place where one goes to start a band so he can get a few mins of airtime on VH1. Prisoners should be kept isolated from the outside world, and they should be given every ample opportunity to suffer through the irreparable harm they may have caused to other innocent people.

Therefore, I believe, the death penalty is not the most efficient or cost effective solution to ending a problem caused by social misfits who would rather die than face their conscience (or what’s left of it). If a murderer/rapist/child molestor/traitor deciding to throw a grenade into his own unit’s tent, etc. was to be executed though, I would not mind one bit.

I just want them to suffer a bit before they are taken out of this earth - without having to take up millions of dollars of public money.

Cheers!

What I’m saying Phil is that the person I was talking to used the system to live a better life in prison. Therein, when he gets out… he will submit himself to crime yet again to fulfill his wishes.

If we treat criminals very well in prison then what is their to fear in crime. Alot of people don’t submit themselves to crime because they fear the prison system… How many times have you heard someone say that they weren’t going to steal something because they were afraid of being some guy’s \*\*\*\*\* in prison… Or anything on the lines of that…

I for one will tell you that I never did anything like stealing or anything because of this sheer fear. It’s not the fear of losing my freedom that scares me… I could sit in a room all day and look through bars and sit there and doodle and draw for a year and not worry about it at all… It’s the fact that I’d have to eat crappy food and possibly be some guy’s \*\*\*\*\* for a year that makes me afraid.

Those are just my opinions. In all… I would love to agree with you in the fact of treating them like men in hopes that they treat us back with respect… But there are plenty of chances given to those who love freedom… Of course certain things like being framed or accidently hitting someone and killing them can entail on the system of “possibilities”… But in special cases like those we should send them to high level prisons in which they are treated with more respect and handled more carefully.

Which leads me to my idea of a prison system… The worse the crime… The less respect you receive. I feel if you “drown 5 of your children” you should be thrown in a low end prison with prisoners like yourself. You shouldn’t be allowed the chance to gain your respect back for that…

But Then again… I’m always on the acts of forgiving and forgetting… So this is actually a hard debate for me to get into… Half hypocritical but half opinionated… I can forgive someone for shooting someone in the head… But I still think that person should pay for his crime. There… That explains it… 🙂

Well said kirupa.

another point that i want to make is that, wouldnt the Executioner be considered a murderer? Or is there some type of legal document that lets him do this with out getting a life sentence?

I do think we need to make our prisons more self-funding. I’m not saying slave labor, but they could learn a trade, make something to sell at market rates to subsidize their criminal arses…

Many prisons, I believe, do allow their prisoners to make works of art, furniture, etc - but that is usually the low/medium security facilities. Of course, the cost far outstrips any small amounts of money the prison makes from the prisoners’ efforts.

Also, I doubt they will let prisoners in a high-security prison (which requires more personnel and costs) do carpentry with a sharp, jagged tool 🙂

Cheers!

I totally oppose the death penalty. It is far too nice to some of the violent criminals. They rape and violently murder people. Then they get to live in a room with digital cable and nice meals for 10 years and then they are put to death without any pain. I think we need to have a law, where if someone murders/rapes more than 5 people, thus proving they are completely inhuman, they should have the same thing done to them that they did to their victims.

Alex, he is protected by law. But when you think about it, would you want to kill people for a living? I dont think i could handle that. Its just that the 10 Commandements state 'Thou shall not Kill" and doing that for a living? I dont know. I just think the death pentelty is bad all around.

edit: Like rev said with the labor. I know that in New York prisoners do work and get paid for it. but its like $0.6 an hour sometimes. Its really bad. But one thing that i was thinking of on a count of what Playa was saying about good conditions, some crimals commit crimes to get off the streets. That was a little off the subject but still…
