# Dreamweaver MX - MAJOR PROBLEM!

yea… i install dreamweaver and the first time i use it works great, but after that if i open the program i get a **JAVASCRIPT** error… everytime and it wont allow me to use the menu’s or anyting… any help… i know this can be solved but how ???

if possible, try rebuilding the site cache. That may (or may not) solve your problem
Files [Panel] \> Site [Tab] \> Site [Menu] \> Recreate Site Cache
if that doesnt work, you might want to try a reinstall

maybe i didnt explain it very well… its not when i open a site its when i open dreamweaver i get the error… i have already try reinstalling… i couldnt try recreate site cache cos i cant use the menus ☹

if it is a valid version, I’d call Macromedia.
Sounds like a buggy version.

I find it interesting how you get a javascript error when opening a program. Being that Javascript is a browser based language and Dreamweaver MX is not a browser (you can compile javascript in it, but it doesn’t use Javascript to run).

Javascript is used heavily by DW for menus and other operations. Why I suggested a rebuild of the cache is because moved files outside of DW within a site can sometimes cause JS errors within some of these functions with the loss of a page or file reference (or something more complex). There’s probably just one crazy js file DW accesses in loading that either is missing or corrupt or in some other way just gone bad that’s causing the problem.

DW uses JS for it’s menus Sen? That’s pretty interesting. Usually programs use XML files or something for their menus, I didn’t know you could use JS for that. Hmm, learn something new everyday :thumb:

well ANY scripting language can cause problems if theres something wrong with the code 😉

The one thing that I’d try is messing around with Internet Explorer. Dreamweaver uses a (slightly modified) version of internet explorer 5 in the preview view. It might have something to do with that.

there is a way to get around it, i remember a freind of mine had it happen to him 2 and he changed a few tings and it works… he dont remember wot he dun… wot would i change in IE then?

i seem to remember something about Dreamweaver using the Virtual Java Machine? Am I correct?
If you don’t have that installed, try installing it?
I know the problem you are having though, ive seen it before. Is your copy of Dreamweaver an “evaluation” 😉 copy shall we say?
