# Efficient chat system like Meebo

I’m wondering at what is needed to implement realtime chat like Meebo or Gmail. Sure, I can do AJAX calls once per second to query MySQL, won’t this use up a ton of bandwidth and disk accessing when you have a few hundred users? What are the correct strategies to implement chat efficiently?
