An old Photoshop technique modified for Flash… Import an image, convert it to a movie clip named “image\_mc” and give this script a whirl:
[AS]import flash.display._;
import flash.filters._;
//
// make a copy of the image mc
var imgCopy\_bmp:BitmapData = new BitmapData(image\_mc.\_width, image\_mc.\_height);
imgCopy\_bmp.draw(image\_mc);
//
// make a copy of the copy which will be inverted and blurred
var blur\_bmp:BitmapData = new BitmapData(imgCopy\_bmp.width, imgCopy\_bmp.height);
blur\_bmp.draw(imgCopy\_bmp);
//
// attach the bitmap copies to movie clips
var imgCopy\_mc:MovieClip = image\_mc.\_parent.createEmptyMovieClip(“cmc”, image\_mc.\_parent.getNextHighestDepth());
imgCopy\_mc.\_x = image\_mc.\_x;
imgCopy\_mc.\_y = image\_mc.\_y;
imgCopy\_mc.attachBitmap(imgCopy\_bmp, 0);
//
var traced\_mc:MovieClip = image\_mc.\_parent.createEmptyMovieClip(“tmc”, image\_mc.\_parent.getNextHighestDepth());
traced\_mc.\_x = image\_mc.\_x;
traced\_mc.\_y = image\_mc.\_y;
traced\_mc.attachBitmap(blur\_bmp, 0);
//
// invert and blur the top mc - blur value of 7 with low quality looks pretty good
traced\_mc.filters = [new ColorMatrixFilter([-1, 0, 0, 0, 255, 0, -1, 0, 0, 255, 0, 0, -1, 0, 255, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0]), new BlurFilter(7, 7, 1)];
//
// set the blend mode of the blurred mc to “add”
//(in Photoshop, colordodge works best, but there is no colordodge mode in Flash, yet)
traced\_mc.blendMode = 8;[/AS]
here’s a quick [example](http://www.onebyonedesign.com/flash/traceImage/). (about 160k with no preloader)

Can’t think of a good use, but it’s fun Flashturbation…

That’s pretty cool, could be used as a nice transition effect.

Come to think of it, that might look nice applied to a video inside a movie clip… hmmm…

incidentally, what I called “line thickness” in that example is actually the blur amount, so to get that effect with the posted script just raise that 7 to whatever… never tried adjusting the x or y blur either - that may be interesting… or not…

wow!.. as for possible implementation: might look sweet as a rollOver effect on an image thumbnail…
