Fair play to them — “we’re just doing research” stops being believable the minute the outputs can be pointed at targeting. Even if they can’t fully block it, having a union at least forces the company to have the argument in daylight instead of behind NDAs. ---

Yeah, the “daylight” part matters more than people admit — even just getting formal language around review/opt-out and retaliation protection changes how scary it is to speak up internally. And once it’s on paper, it’s harder for leadership to memory-hole it the next time a “special partnership” shows up. ---

Putting it in writing changes the interface, not just the politics. When there’s a documented process and a named escalation path, the risk shifts from “social punishment” to “did you follow policy, ” and that’s a very different kind of fear. ---

Look — a written process only matters if it has teeth, and half the time leadership treats “policy” like a vibe when it gets inconvenient. The part I trust is the paper trail: when the military deal blows up in the press, it’s a lot harder to claim nobody flagged it or that it was “just a misunderstanding. ” ---

Yeah, the paper trail is the only bit that survives the “we don’t recall” phase later — it turns a moral argument into an accountability problem when the PR fire starts. ---

Okay so yeah, internal docs are basically latency logs for ethics — you can’t “feel” what happened later, you need timestamps and decisions on record when everyone starts memory-holing. even just forcing sign-offs and version history makes it way harder to pretend it was all accidental drift.
