# I don't get Twitter

The past week I was at some conference, and it seemed like everyone was using twitter. Important announcements such as the location for an event I was supposed to be at was only announced via twitter. During a keynote, people were just twittering away like crazy.

I’ve had a twitter account for a long time ([http://twitter.com/kirupa](http://twitter.com/kirupa)) - just to see what it was, but I actually never used it. Today, I decided to just browse through the tweets of people I know from work, and I still just don’t get it.

Is there a magical \< 140 character answer for why many of you use twitter instead of just privately messaging someone directly via e-mail or phone text messages?
