# Illustrator Grid Layout

I’m trying to create a grid layout for a catalog in Adobe Illustrator and I was wondering if anyone knew an easy and fast way of doing this.
When I say grid layout, I don’t mean enabling grids, I already know how to do that. What I want is to have a way of dividing a 8.5 x 11 page into sections horizontally and vertically.
I normally would use Quark Express for this, but I don’t have access to that program right now so I must resort to Illustrator.
I’ve attached samples to better illustrate what I’m trying to achieve.

you could use your rules to mark out the section you want. Ctl R for rulers and pull them out from the ruler margin. I know there are other ways but ive forgotten how at the moment :-\

Well I tried using your method with Illustrator, but it wasn’t efficient enough so I ran to the office and used Quark Express instead since I know how to do it on that program.

fair enough, funny enough Quark does have its good features, lol… 😛
Lately I’ve been using indesign 2 at work, and found that its so much better than Quark, in almost every aspect !!! :!:

I am with you Soulty. While in school we had to use Quark and I hated the program. I mean it was pretty powerfull and had it’s great qualities but I couldnt stand it.
Then I got to work where I am now and we moved over to indesign and I couldnt be happier… I guess since I am used to the Adobe pallet’s and such it’s made the transition better…

here goes - draw a box the total size of the grid - then goto TYPE\>ROWS AND COLUMNS. Now enter in the divisions!This splits up the large box into lots of smaller ones!!! Try it out!! Hope this helps eg…

hahaha a bit late there mario, I already got the catalog done with Quark.
Soulty, I use to hate Quark as well, but one day I landed a job at a printing company and that was their main program so I had no choice, but to use it. After awhile it’s not bad at all, the interface maybe a bit dull, but the printing features on that program is awesome. Maybe that’s why it’s been the industry standard for so long.
