# Losing instances in the timeline

I am working in Flash cs3 and coding in Actionscript 3. If I put a instans of a button or a text field on a keyframe in the timeline and give this instans an instansname, if I then leave this keyframe and move to a part of the timeline where the instans is not present, and then move back to the instans keyframe, then I have lost the instans if I try to adress the instans I get a error massage.  
Do I have to add the instances to the Display List, even if I are working in the timeline?
