I’m in the process of learing maya and i’m going threw some basic tuts but i’ve run into a snag.

I’m selecting a face of a retangle polygon and extruding it. Now it says to use the “show manipulator tool”. problem is this tool does not work for me. Does anybody now how i can enable this tool so i can continue the tutorials?

PS: for a novice user who is just learning 3d would i be better off learning may od 3DSM? All I want to do is create some simple pipes and blobs and such to use in Photoshop. I’m really not looking to get to advanced with it all.

Might I suggest posting to [MayaWizard.com](http://MayaWizard.com) about this? It’s a small community, but the people there are a good mix of university professors, 3-D grad students, and newbies like yourself. Someone might be able to help you faster there.

MMmhh I saw the Maya interface once I will gladly stick to cinema 4d… I mean I tried on an expo machine to work in fullscreen (ie no tools/bars) i couldnt even get back to the menu… I believe Maya is for very highly trained professionals, and I am very impressed with people who manage to render even a simple cube…

maya isnt that hard, it just a matter of learning where things are… are you using NURBS or poly’s? 1st off?
second if your using NURBS you can modify by adding hulls, me i think it’s useless, i personally use polyogonal modeling.
all the tools you will need are in the modeling menu under the poly’s , there you have extrude face ,edge, split poly, mege edges and merge mult. edges…or you could download CPS tools (connect poly shape) [http://www.lightstorm3d.com/tools/freetools/html/connectPolyShape.html](http://www.lightstorm3d.com/tools/freetools/html/connectPolyShape.html) .

jayemsee , if sintax is selecting a face wouldnt he be using Polys?

Sintax: is the tutorial asking you to extrude the face? if so you can go to the modelling tab , then go to edit polygons , then go to extrude face, make sure your face is selected first, this will give you a new set of manipulator, there are arrows and scale handles with this tool, and also a blue circle which is used to scale or translate (move) your object locally or globally.

Thanks for the great reply Soulty. The problem is i do exactly that and the shoe manipulator tool never shows up. I go over to the side menu and click it and it still doesn’t show up. I even go modify\>Transform Tools\>show manipulator tool and the tool never shows up. Do you know why maya won’t let me use this tool when i’ve done the exact steps needed to use it.

PS: I hadent’ seen this reply till u mentioned it in the other thread. Thnaks again.

if you start up a new scene does the same thing happen?,

Make a new scene , create a polygon cube, right click select a face and then select the extrude face tool. nothing else. tell me if it works that way.

so do any of the normal manipulator tools show, like move , scale, rotate? if not maybe you resized them, try hitting the plus key on your keyboard while a maniupator is selected, you might of made the manipulators too small to see.

Hey sintax , try this

from a dude at 3dbuzz

:::this might work
This problem might just be a simple bug problem…

I suggest after applying the extrude tool, he press the Q(move) then press the Y(show maipulator tool) again…this should work::
