# Multiple shapes in mask layer

I would assume I could create as many shapes as I wanted in a mask layer. But, flash only seems to recognize the first shape I draw on the stage. WHy is that. I’ve tried grouping the shapes, joining them in a movie clip, but only the first shape drawn in the layer acts as the mask. How do I correctly use multiple shapes for a more complex mask?
