The angle here isn’t that Nvidia is hedging against OpenAI. It’s that they’re building a customer. Safe Superintelligence needs an order of magnitude more compute to work, which means it needs Nvidia GPUs. Which Nvidia will sell.

Sutskever’s lab isn’t a competitor to Nvidia. It’s infrastructure that justifies Nvidia’s pricing and keeps the demand curve steep. That’s not diversification, that’s vertical integration dressed as a venture bet.

The round number is what gets me though, 1 billion into a lab with no product and no revenue model beyond "trust me. " That only pencils out if the compute spend comes back to Nvidia as GPU orders anyway.
