whats a good way of creating paint splatters and smearing in photoshop… ---

one way for splatters is to actually make some then photograph it. I just mixed a bit of blue dye with some flour and water to make a _slightly_ thick paste, and dropped it on some card. Took some shots and now i have a variety of splats to use. Works pretty well for most of my needs. you can also customise a few of the brushes to suit you depending on what kind of splats you want. If you’re not looking for the spiky kind, you can do pretty well with the dry or wet media brushes. theres also other brush sets you can d/l that are specifically for this kinda thing i think. ---

your best bet would be to download some brushes. just google it and you’ll find plenty ---

Something like this: [list] [_]Brush tool [_]I used a red foreground a brownish background [_]I Chose the brush ‘13’ in the default set [_]Set the Hardness to 0, and I set the diameter to around 130. [_]Go to ‘Brushes’ menu, and turn off everything but Noise [_]Draw! [/list] I got something like this: ---

oh yes your method is good… but for the second link i posted… its more of a paint brush rather than a spray can… ---

I see. Well, you can do that, too. Add the variation thing, and it’ll randomly move things around. Add both directions of variation. 🙂 ---

hey geestring if you do a search, you’ll find links to brushes. Someone asked it not long ago, there’s a few links in the useful tutes/resources sticky, and also in other posts. and you shouldn’t use illustrator for this kind of thing (in my opinion)… you CAN do it, but especially for really detailed ones photoshop is better, so don’t worry about the illustrator brushes for this (though it’s good to understand them anyway). ---

Look for Brush resources. even the default brushes can be help, just mix and match different brush styles. there you go ---
