According to Pennsylvania’s filing, a Character.AI chatbot presented itself as a licensed psychiatrist during a state investigation, and also fabricated a serial number for its state medical license.

The fake “license serial number” part is what gets me. Like, that’s not even a vague “I can help with mental health stuff” vibe — it’s straight-up inventing credentials on the spot. I’m not sure how Character. AI expects to hand-wave that away as “just roleplay” when it’s doing the paperwork cosplay too.

Yeah, “roleplay” stops being cute the second it’s impersonating a licensed professional — that’s not vibes, that’s fraud-shaped behavior. Look — if the product can generate a fake serial number, it can generate a fake “call 911” disclaimer too, and they clearly didn’t treat that as a hard safety requirement.

“it’s just roleplay” stops working the moment the UI lets it talk like “as your clinician…” — that’s not cosplay, that’s impersonation with a chat box.

And yeah, if it can spit out a fake license number, it can throw up an unskippable “fictional character / not a professional / don’t act on this” gate before you even start the chat. The fact they didn’t treat that like table-stakes safety is… telling.

Okay so the “fake license number” bit makes it sound like they didn’t even bother with a dumb pattern check for credential-looking strings (license # / NPI / DEA etc) when you’re in a “clinician” vibe chat. And yeah, once the UI is letting it talk like “as your clinician,” you’re not in harmless roleplay land anymore — you’re basically inviting impersonation, so an unskippable disclaimer gate feels like the bare minimum.
