# Photos in Flash

I wonder if anyone can help me out with this:
I am putting together a site of black & white photography. I scan negatives into Photoshop, do what editing needs to be done, etc. Then I import them into Flash MX, and the quality looks just as it did in Photoshop. My problem is that, after I place the photos into the Flash movie and publish it, the quality significantly decreases! The images are pixilated and look nothing like the saved versions in Photoshop.
I cannot figure out what is happening - I’m sure it must be something simple I am overlooking, but it’s frustrating and keeping me from progressing with my site.
Any suggestions? I would really appreciate the help- thanks!

About your problem: Plz answer those questions for me.
Are you changing the dimensions of those images inside flash? What is the file type you are importing them to flash? Are you breaking them appart?

To answer your questions:
Yes, I am reducing the sizes of the photos once they are imported into Flash.
Saved as .jpg’s
and no, I am not breaking them apart…

i meant… are you resizing those images _inside_ flash?

you can´t resize images in flash. Flash is a vector based program, to resize a bitmap you have to do it on the proper software, like photoshop, firewors… 😉

make sure you are publishing your movie in High quality, and that you see the difference in the “smoothing” option…
2nd option: give us a fla, and we will see what the prob is…

i´m sure.
flash doesn´t handle bitmap images so well. is best for you to import the image on the exact size you´ll use it on your movie.
sometimes, if you increase or decrease the size by little, you don´t notice the difference, but there is. believe me.

if you scale down the image you will not notice the difference coz they´re too small, and/or, coz scaling down doesn´t affect the image´s quality that bad.
but if you scale up the image, the poor quality will hit you in the face 😉

there is an unwritten rule that says that, even on bitmap softwares, you shouldn´t scale an image, up or down, with more than 30% of its original size.

as will any bitmap program, such as Photoshop, Fireworks, etc…
your quality is only as good as the original (you can’t “lighten” an image very much without loosing quality), so I assumed you were talking about resizing down…

good info, here, just let me add my .02 to the thread:
in addition to the above suggestions, also look at your publish settings, and try setting the jpg compression between 80-100 --publish a couple tests at different compression levels and check out the image differences…
also, guigo is right about sizing your images in photoshop to 100% of what you want in flash, especially since you’re a photographer, you want them as close to perfect as possible;\>
the 30% rule of thumb, tho, is just a guideline–if you know what you’re doing in photoshop, you can enlarge/add ppi way beyond what used to be considered ‘safe’ IF you know what you’re doing…I know because i’ve been there and done that, both in print AND on screen…(-:
