Please forgive me, but a friend of mine wanted some honest criticism on his site and he doesn’t have a membership here, so I said I would post it for him. I told him my thoughts but he kind of blew me off and said I wasn’t a “pro” and didn’t know what I was talking about. If you could please take just a few minutes, I think it might stop him from quitting his day job 🙂

Needs a consistent layout.
Needs a solid color scheme.
Needs better rollovers.
It looks like he just copied and pasted a ton and didn’t really plan the look of the site out at all if any before hand. He really needs to sit down and draw up mock ups of what the site should look like when its done.
Its pretty bad yes.

Cmon guys…
I mean… it’s one thing if you don’t like it but why are you posting just to write stuff like “_vomits_” or something equally mentally equivalent of a 12 year old. This forum isn’t for bashing, it’s to help people. If you don’t like it then at least write a few lines about why. If you don’t want to do that then just… don’t post. It creates such an unpleasant atmosphere. Feels like I’m browsing the xbox guitar hero forums or something… 😕

Tell your friend he’s a coward for not signing up himself and posting here.
Regarding the site, I can’t even figure out what it is. There is no clear navigation, hierarchy, or flow. The intent of the site is not clear. Not to mention the URL is nearly indistinguishable from a spa URL. Can your friend spare the $7USD to invest in a normal URL? Did you friend research ANY other expat websites before producing this?

It has to be said, as constructively as possible, that’s one of the worst sites I’ve seen in a while. It hurt my eyes and made me feel queasy, it sent a cold shiver down my spine and left me with a bad taste in my mouth after I’d closed the site. Hideous.

1st question…expats from where? UK expats, US expats, Oz expats, or just expats in general? It’s not clear who the target audience for this site is.
2nd question…Has your mystery friend done any research into what expats are looking for? In my experience they’re looking for two things:- a taste of the country/culture they’re moving to, and nostalgic things that remind them of home. None of that appears to be anywhere on the site…where are the links to useful info like how to obtain a driving licence, register for work, get access to a doctor/dentist in their new country? Where are the directions to shops that sell HP sauce/foot-long hot dogs/Scalliwag biscuits; or the bars that sell Newcastle Brown Ale/Budweiser/Bundaberg rum?
Until he’s addressed those fundamental questions, I don’t see much point discussing the look of the site…most of the problems relating to its tawdry, ill-conceived, illogical, and headache-inducing layout have already been expressed by others.

Will your comments potentially discourage a young/new designer from turning this into a hobby and becoming the best designer in the world?
