# Problem detecting event

I am a bit of a newb with flash, but I have been trying to cram as much as I can over the past few months. (was making good headway before the new AS3.0 came along). Now I am working on nav for a site and I cant seem to get the buttons to work. I broke it down as far as I could and commented out all the code. I placed a simple button on the stage and tried to get it to trace(“This button works”); but to no avail. I have the instance name set, addEventListener is attached to the button instance name. Both are also on the main timeline. What am I missing? I ran the exact same scenario in a new FLA and it worked fine. For some reason I think the event is just not broadcasting… Is there a way to troubleshoot this other than running a trace? I am almost to the point of breaking something here. any help would be greatly appreciated.
