# Root reference

hello I’m trying to reference to var “work:Boolean” from a number of movieclips on stage like this:

this.addEventListener(Event.ENTER\_FRAME, play\_work);

function play\_work (e:Event):void {  
if (MovieClip(root).work == true) {  
play();} else {stop();}  
}

everything works fine but when i go to a diffrent  
I’m getting the very annoying error #1009  
please help me
