I have a video of a family friend who “bounced” but I can’t get it from VHS to my computer. He opened his chute and both shoulder straps snapped off, he fell to the ground landed really hard in the middle of a field bounced about 5ft back into the air then finally stopped with a headache and a busted wrist. The doctor said the broken wrist was from the bounce not the initial impact. It certainly wasn’t 22,000 ft but he fell quite a ways virtually without injury, a will forever be known as bounce.

I think I read once that the BOUNCE was from your internal organs compressing on impact and then springing back out again…

Has anyone else heard this or am I dreaming ?

luckily my parachute always opened.

btw.: It doesn’t really matter if you fall down 1000 meters or 10000

Do you hit TV at 1000m ?

Nope you hit terminal velocity when you stop accelerating, there is no set speed at which all people will stop accelerating so it isn’t dependant on height.

> Nope you hit terminal velocity when you stop accelerating, there is no set speed at which all people will stop accelerating so it isn’t dependant on height.

Ummmm that makes no sense…… there is a speed limit, TV people will reach….
And height does play a role… And yes it wont be exactly the same for all…

Ok altitude (air thickness) plays apart.
Size of person (air resistance) plays apart
And obviously how they are falling.

I thought that for people TV was about 400kph…… Rather than try to work out my acceleration at 9.8m and see if 1000m and 400kph are in the same area I thought I would just ask.

> so it isn’t dependant on height.

If you fall 5m you won’t hit TV.
If you fall 20,000m you will hit TV.

Since TV for a human is I think around 400kph, my question remains…. Do you hit TV after falling 1000m ?

Hence his statement…

It doesn’t really matter if you fall down 1000 meters or 10000…
and if you hit a TV it will brake no matter if 1000 or 10000 meters

ok enhanced statement for all you nitpickers out there:
It doesn’t really matter if you fall down 1000 meters or 10000 _except you are trying to become famous_

v1=0 m/s
v2=?
a=9.8 m/s/s
d=1000m
TV=111 m/s (approx 400 kph)

v2^2 = v1^2 + 2ad
v2^2 = 0 + 2 \* 9.8 m/s/s \* 1000 m
v2^2 = 19600 (m/s)^2
v2 = 140 m/s

therefore, terminal velocity is reached 😃

[EDIT] Note that v2 != 140 m/s because of TV. I’m just showing that the person _will_ hit a point where their velocity is 111 m/s and at that point they will stop accelerating.

3500ft?

Thats pretty low

What are you jumping static line?

I have two jumps at 14,000 ft.

Good like Elya, its a lot of fun I hope you enjoy ty.

Or around 135 MPH.

And yeah 3500 ft is REALLY low. AT TV it will only take about 18 seconds to hit the ground. It must be a static line, they would provide just enough time for the chute to open and have a nice leisurly decent. I would still want to up to 5000 ft, at least.

I have been contemplating going jumping for awhile, maybe next spring…

Now this is one **DAM SEXY ANSWER** …

If only I was better at Maths, or not so lazy… I would have sat down and tried to work it out myself.

There are too many different ways to measure velocity though. Kph, m/s, mph, bah! :d:

But remember people, just because all of these people survived, doesn’t mean you will. 😉 I would be willing to be that well over half of all people sucked out of planes and put into a state of freefall don’t survive the sudden ending.

a guy dropped out of a plane 15,000 feet in the sky and the branches and snow cushioned his fall… pretty lucky eh?
