Hey guys-
Well school is comming up and one of my friends is looking for a 5.1 surround sound system for his dorm room. I really wouldnt know what to tell him so i figured, why not post here.

He basicly said that he likes the idea of 5.1 for total surround sound, and he said he cant live without the woofer. He said he has $800 to work with and it has to be able to hook up to the headphone jack on his ocmputer (and iPod, etc).

Think y’all could help us out?

Thanks a bunch-
-Mike

He wants to make sure that its LOUD tho, which i doubt will be a problem for any of the systems posted.

The more the merryer for options!

Yeah, I’m pretty sure he wont be dissapointed by A.L. I have the the ADA745 and I love it. it’s a 4.1 though and it has great quailty! I prefer it over most hi-tech stereo systems! ![](http://kirupaforum.com/forums/images/smilies/vhappy.gif)

Tell your friend to make sure that his receiver is compatible with all the best sound formats (THX, Dolby Digital, etc.)

He could buy the receiver and speakers seperately though it doesn’t really matter.

With $800 he should be able to get a real nice one, you know one that makes the walls shake.

\*Edit: One more thing, tell him not to settle for anything less than 5.1 Dolby Surround :pleased: \*

Wizard, even for just his computer speakers? Basicly he just wants his stuff REALLY loud…

Hahaha. I have a Creative 6.1 Digital Surround Sound speaker set-up on my computer. At 400 watts, it’s quite loud. Also, if he’s getting it for his computer as well, make sure his sound card allows for surround sound. Otherwise, he’ll be disappointed.

</div>

Yes, you need the receiver to get the full effect… although, if he has a good sound card (one that also supports multiple formats) and it’s _only_ gonna be used for his computer, then getting a receiver won’t be necessary.

Haha, I have a 5.1 Dolby Surround with 600 watts.

_Sorry for spamming, this was just in response to Ectheo’s system. Which is pretty good, I’ve never heard what a 6.1 sounds like._

Receivers are more for Home Theater systems anyway, where you have multiple things that will be using it… I think what Tuna mentioned might be what he’s looking for for his comp. 😉

If he will be connecting it to a laptop, he may want to consider also purchasing an external USB sound card such as the Creative Extigy ([http://www.soundblaster.com/products/extigy/](http://www.soundblaster.com/products/extigy/)).

That does support 5.1 Digital I believe :nerd:

also you want to watch it - if its for a laptop you might want to just buy a really nice computer sound system…

if you start buying home entertainment receivers, your sound card will not have enough juice to power it.

altec lansing makes sweet speakers…
Creative as well especially with the external or internal now AUDIGY cards

and for some of the best sound you will ever hear in your life:

Klipsch ProMedia

THX certified.

800$ is overkill for this unless you start going into home entertainment systems…but as i said above about wattage.

You took the words right out of my mouth Paul 😉 I would also reccomend Creative as well since they make good sound cards as well. [http://www.creative.com/products/welcome.asp?cat=4](http://www.creative.com/products/welcome.asp?cat=4)

But hey check out the TDK s150 - [http://www.tdk.com/speakers/tremors150.html](http://www.tdk.com/speakers/tremors150.html)

>

Flagship of the Tremor line, the S150 is perfect for those who demand the most intense multimedia, music and video gaming experiences. With dual subwoofer drivers and NXT-designed flat-panel satellite speakers, there’s no stopping this audiophile quality system. Plug into your PC’s soundcard, a video game console or even a portable CD player for a mini-system that’ll trounce expensive home stereo rigs.

My friend has it, jeez the sound output is a beast. 150watts and was playing UT2k4. I played Wolfenstein over his house as well and with it on, scared the crap out of me with some of the levels.

in on the logitech too. they dont get too ‘belchy’ no matter how loud you go, and they’re not too expensive either! my bro uses the audigy2 card, and i must say it is an addition worth getting. (especially if your motherboard doesn’t already have built in surround sound, you’re gonna need a sound card)

as for hooking it up to an iPod etc, what i do is i use the provided adapter that lets you hook up your gaming consoles’ RCA output (um i’m not too good with what the wires are called, but it’s the one which comes in red and white for left/right) to your speakers.
instead of rca-rca cable, i have a rca-mini plug cable to connect my md player to that adapter, to which the speakers are connected.
