# What does (some variable) = {} mean?

A variable is typed -

private var \_properties:Object

then instanciated -

\_properties = {}

then used-

\_properties[pKey] = pValue

Is this creating or assigning a property to the object \_properties ? Is it like making an array of properties for the variable?
