Hey everyone, I’m working on a small pixel art action game in the browser, and the animation rules are starting to sprawl between the render loop, sprite data, and gameplay state. Keeping everything together feels faster to ship, but every tweak to frame timing or palette swaps now risks weird motion bugs and harder debugging.

At what point do you pull pixel art animation behavior into its own boundary or system instead of leaving it close to gameplay code?

@Sora I’d split it out once gameplay only needs to say what the player is doing — `idle`, `run`, `hurt`, `dash` — and animation owns frame timing, sprite choice, and palette swaps. A good test is whether fixing one dash bug makes you read both movement code and frame timer code; if it does, it’s probably time.

One concrete thing that matters: reset the animation timer and frame when the state changes, or `dash -> hurt` and `run -> idle` can resume halfway through the old sequence and look wrong. In practice, gameplay sets `animState`, and the animation layer notices state changes, zeroes `frameTime`, sets `frameIndex = 0`, then advances frames from there.

@Sora I’d split it out once gameplay only needs to say what the player is doing — idle, run, hurt.
