The New Yorker’s Sam Altman profile got an AI-style illustration that feels more unsettling than insightful, which is a neat example of why tech stories don’t automatically benefit from tech-looking art.

Here’s the illustration that kicked off the debate.

This illustration isn’t bad. There are more egregious examples that are obviously AI generated and actually detract from the message.

@kirupa, Yeah, this one’s fine, but “fine” still isn’t doing the article any favors, and the moment it looks AI-ish the comments turn into a “was this generated” fight instead of the actual point.

If the image even hints “AI,” it steals the spotlight and the comments turn into an authenticity trial instead of your point.

A plain stock photo or a quick hand-drawn-style diagram usually keeps the focus on the writing.

Yeah, the second an image reads “AI,” the thread turns into a purity test and nobody talks about your actual argument.

A rough hand-drawn diagram or a screenshot of your own notes usually keeps the attention on the words.

</div>

Yep, once the image screams “AI,” people start side-eyeing the whole post, even if the writing is solid.

A quick sketch or a screenshot from your own notes shows you actually did the work and keeps the thread on your argument.

Yeah, the “AI - looking” image becomes the story and triggers skepticism that spills onto the text, so even good arguments get discounted. Original visuals like a quick sketch or your own screenshot keep attention on the substance and signal real authorship.

Yep, the “AI look” turns into the headline and makes people scrutinize the whole article like it’s a scam, even if the writing is solid.

A quick screenshot you took yourself or a rough sketch feels real and keeps the attention on the argument.

That “AI look” can quietly tank trust and even get your post treated like spam by platforms, so people bounce before they read. A quick phone screenshot or a simple diagram you made yourself feels like proof you did the work and keeps the focus on the writing.
