Animating characters in flash

i have a question about characters in flash. i want to make a site with somewhat realistic animated characters. i’ve found that there are several ways i can go about doing so.

  1. i can use actual video footage, like this mountain dew site: http://www.md-extreme.pl/
  2. i can use video footage, and using adobe after effects, vectorize the video to create something similar to apple’s ipod commercials
  3. i can sketch the characters either by hand and redraw them with photoshop and import to flash, or just start from scratch in flash.

in general, i would like to keep the characters fairly simple. in the movie clip, they will not be sized so large, so fine details such as facial expressions will not be important.

which one of the three methods would you recommend? i am hoping to get some feedback from flashers who have experience with making characters. i personally feel that going with vector animation would be the best way to go, but the only problem with that is that the only way i could show the character’s emotions would be to include captions/thought bubbles…which i’m not sure if that would be a good idea.
