Any ideas for animating a Northern Lights effect?

I’m building a site about the 7 natural wonders of the world for a class project and I’m stuck on a way to animate the Northern Lights, maybe even controlled by mouse overs. Anyone have any ideas? Your input is greatly appreciated! Thanks again!
