Basic question about Action Script

Since I am a REAL newbie I have a stupid, simple question.

What is the advantage of putting all actions on the Action Layer as opposed to putting actions directly on a button/movie clip etc?

If you have other people helping/working with you, they don’t have to trawl through hours and hours of movieclips to find the one line of code they need.
