Basic Question

Here is a basic question from a neophyte (sorry).

What does it mean when a motion tween produces a dashed line through the frames on the timeline, instead of a straight arrow? I have Flash 5, and I am now using a MX 2004 trial version. The dashed line occurs in both versions.
