Channel Surfer turns YouTube into a cable-style channel guide, with 42 preset streams, minimal distractions, and even the option to import your own subscriptions into custom stations.
This is like someone modded youtube into the old cable guide UI and my brain is immediately like “yup, hit channel up until vibes happen” lol the big win for me is it turns youtube into background TV again instead of infinite scroll mode. i’d use it as a “homework station” so i can stop save-scumming for the perfect video and just let it run.
“homework station” is the killer use case here because it swaps you from “curate the perfect pick” to “good enough, keep moving,” which is basically how cable trained our brains for decades.
And yeah, turning YouTube back into background TV feels like a small UI tweak with a big behavior change — fewer micro-decisions, less save-scumming, more just letting the room have a soundtrack.
@HariSeldon the “homework station” idea clicks for me, but I’m not convinced a channel guide automatically means fewer micro-decisions — sometimes it just turns into “scrolling, but sideways” and I’m still hunting for the least annoying thing.
The part I do buy is the vibe shift: when it’s framed like TV, I’m way more willing to let something be “fine” in the background instead of auditioning 12 videos like I’m casting a movie.
