College Interview Preperation Help

Hey guys, more annoying questions from me about college stuff.
I have an interview at The New England Institute of Art next tuesday and I have no idea what I need to be prepared for this. The guy told me to bring a few peices of art and my transcripts and all, but I don’t really know what kind of peices to bring. Should I take stuff that’s unique and sets me apart (which I have none of) or should I take some still lifes and traditional stuff like that. Also I am going to be talking to him specifically about the Graphic Design program so should I take some stuff I’ve done in Photoshop and Illustrator or what? I just need some general info.
Also any questions that you think I should ask would be great, I am just sort of lost here.

Thanks guys

If you have the time, I highly recommend putting together a professional looking portfolio - i.e. something bound, where the pages are protected. Even something like plastic sleeves in a sexy little binder (you can find leather ones etc.) would look really great. If you have large format stuff as well then bring both.

Bring a variety of styles - show them that you can handle the traditional stuff but also have your own unique flavor that you are looking to develop at their school. Make sure you know about the program you are signing up for before you go in - in terms of what people are doing, what the prof specialities are etc. so you can talk about how attending their school will advance your achievements, blah blah blah.

Any chance you can put together a small flash portfolio site? That way you can also bring in a disc to leave with them that they can stick in your application file. You will not only wow them with your artwork but also your programming/web style/flash skills as well.

Good luck! :thumb:

Well the guy said the stuff I bring in should be really informal, so I’m not too worried about the presentation of it. I like the idea of the mix of styles, I’ll definitely do that. Unfortunately I blow profusely at flash, so the flash portfolio probably won’t happen, but I may whip up a website or something for it.

Thank you very much for the response! =)

Be prepared for questions like:

1.) Why do you want to attend there?

2.) Why should [insert college name] accept you?

3.) Why are you interested in that particular major?

Those are the ones that I can think of right now. I’ll add more if I remember any more from my horrible college interviews :stuck_out_tongue:

Well I guess I should clarify. I think this interview is more for me to ask questions and them to answer me, but it’s at the same time a chance for them to get a feel for me and how I work and all. I won’t be applying for another couple months actually, so this isn’t to decide if I get accepted or not, though I think it could help my chances greatly if I play my cards right.

Thanks kirupa, I’ll definitely consider good answers to those questions.

I don’t think the interview is there for you to ask questions. They don’t need you more than you need them, unless you are an extremly good artist. I applied to an art school and went through an interview process as well. Although it was more of a formal process. I did a couple of paintings, drawings as well as some digital. I framed the digital and drawings on a black bristol board to make it look presentable and ALSO be prepared to have slides developed for your images.(Although yours is an informal process i don’t think you’d need it, but just in case be prepared). I also had my art teacher write a letter recomending me, as well as bringing in some documents of my achievments related to art. They didn’t ask me any questions Kirupa brought up (but always be prepared). They were more intrested in the artwork. So be prepared to talk about the art work you created ie. talk about the theme you were trying to create, moods and techniques used to create these. ALSO be prepared to answer basic art questions like;

what are the principles and elements of art?

PREPARE PREPARE PREPARE eventhough it is an informal interview. The more it seems like you know what your talking about the better your chances are of getting in

PREPARATION

quote Lunatic Even something like plastic sleeves in a sexy little binder (you can find leather ones etc.)

Make them think you are professional minded. Art disciplines may seem laid back but dont be fooled. Have a portfolio ready and dont say you have done it for them especially… act like you have the pick of any college, as much as why you show them what you are made of, ask what they can offer you!! i.e ask how their facilities have been updated in recent years and what visiting lecturers they have

If you dont think it, then they defintiely wont. i.e. tell ureself ‘I AM THE BOMB’

FAIL TO PREPARE AND PREPARE TO FAIL :beam:

good luck

Kay - this isn’t an interview to see if I will get accepted, I have not even applied to the school, they are just getting to know me. You’re talking about an interview after an application was sent in to see if they will actually accept me. This is not that.
Thanks everyone for the advice, I really appreciate it.

First impressions are the most important.
