COM objects - sending and reading data. Is it possible?

Hey guys, been a long time since I could not find any information regarding my dilemas. But this time I hit a wall. So my last resort is the smart kirupa community, yes you :). I got a task, to connect to a printer by using COM objects, sending/reading commands. I found lots of information how to do that on VB, Borland Delphi, and other… VB is what I chose at first. I made a simple app which worked just fine. But then I saw a working desktop application - which base was flash. And guess what, it did every task regarding printer commands. As I am a flash developer, I got really intrigued. I cannot see the working application source code, and also cannot play with the final product anymore (since the app was made by my competitors  )… I have no idea how they made it work. I had time just to figure out it was running on flash player  (like an AIR application). By the style of the application I guess it used some of the flex components. So my question to you guys: Is there a possibility to somehow create a COM object in flash? Maybe they were using a backend technology (maybe PHP) to do that, this would be my best guess, though that I could not find any information regarding the COM object in flash.

I will buy a pint of beer to the one who can help me with this

Thank you.
