So, I’m looking to upgrade my Dell Dimension 4500 and give it a last run before building a new system in a year or so, maybe longer, when this 64-bit and dual core stuff really takes off. Then I will give old faithful a rest and make it my HTPC.
Here are some general current specs:
P4 2.0Ghz
384 MB PC2100 RAM (1 x 128, 1 x 256)
40GB HDD
GeForce4 mx420 64MB AGP
I’m basically thinking of upgrading to 1gig of ram, and also upgrading the video card.
My budget for a video card is about $150 CAD… so approx. $130USD… which leaves me looking at an nVidia 6600 (non-gt), or a 9600XT (or other cards your could suggest).
I’m wondering whether this upgrade would even be worth it? Will it last a year or two?
(i’m not a hardcore gamer by any means… and dont mind the lowest of low settings, but the lag in Ironforge for World of Warcraft has driven me to the brink of insanity, and I do like to try out games, and my current video card has served me decently until now).
Also, will my current PSU (250W i believe) support these newer fancy shmancy video cards? The case is pretty loaded up (SB Live card, WinTV PVR 150, CD-ROM DRIVE, DVDRW DRIVE, modem, vid card, etc.)
Thanks in advance for any help… and also, I would appreciate any link to stores that ship to Canada.
