Counter strike LAN plz help

how can i set up a CS lan, my computers are sitting right next to each other, can i just connect the cable and start playing? how do you make a server? i cant figure out where to download “hlds”. fileshack and fileplanet suck *****. my copy of hlds doesnt work. can some one please help me, i already googled this…
