Couple questions to ask before tackling project

I gotta a couple questions as I havent really scaled anything like this before and I was hoping someone on here has or at least would have some ideas.

The current plan in place is to design a menu board for a local donut shop. Instead of the typical menu boards you would see at places like McDonalds this will be done with 4 LCD’s. The person Im working for would like to see the menus done in Flash (if possible) so there can be a little bit of animation on the menu instead of just seing a static menu all the time.

The questions I have are these

Im under the assumption this can be done (if not someone please correct me or tell me a better method). Basically what will happen is as soon as the computer boots up there should be a command that launches each seperate section of the menu (hopefully to each different screen).

Is projecter the way to work with this and more importantly has anyone ever done something like this? If so please drop me a line as Im trying to do some research for this.

yes it can be done… assuming the computer(s) have windows as an OS simply stick the projector file (you were right, a projector is probably the best solution for a local presentation) into the start menu > startup folder (if its in XP its start menu > all programs > startup) unless i misunderstand you…
ive not got a clue about working with multiple monitors connected to one PC im afraid…

erm one point to note however is that a .exe is very hard thing to update…
simple text etc could be loaded dynamically from a local text file as a solution but those simple animations wouldnt…
if he wanted to change/update anything other than previously selected text instances (ie. prices) hed have to call u in again… which is not very conveniant/economic…

UNLESS u taught him basic flash… :S (but this might do you out of a job if you do it too well!)

erm… kinda embarrassed here… seein as i was first person to post a helpful post here… dyu reckon you could get him to send me a donut or 2??

lol only jokin  (altho if he really wants to send edible donuts my way hes more than welcome!! :D)

Prophet.

:to: I can get him to send you a donut, I just hope you dont mind if it gets a little hard by the time it reaches you lol

Updating the animations isnt going to be a concern as I dont think they will be doing major updating with it. The only thing they really need updating would be the prices which I was thinking (as you suggested) of loading it from a text file.

Like you say the only thing Im concerned about is getting the menu’s to work on all the proper LCD screens. It would end up being an inconvenice if they had to manually set everything.

Another quick question, Ive never used the projecter although I assume its not to difficult…but is there anyway to have the exe file or flash file for that matter automatically go full screen upon launching? I guess I mean is there any actionscript that does this?

Nevermind, just found fscommand(“fullscreen”, “true”);

To make it go full screen you would need to place this on the first frame:[AS]fscommand(“fullscreen”, “true”);[/AS]

And to make it launch automatically you would need to create a text document (Notepad) called: autorun.inf

This is what your text document should contain:
[autorun]
OPEN=projector.exe

Obviously you would just change the name of your projector.

Hope this helped.

actually wizard, u only need an autorun file like that on CDs but seeing as he wants this to load everytime your computer boots up, you can just put the projector.exe into the startup folder of the startmenu the only potential problem would be user accounts but i highly doubt a computer used for this purpose would have more than one account and therefore there wouldnt be any problems with login screens etc… of course if there were multiple accounts, u coiuld just set up an account called “menu” and have the staff boot up the computer and login to this “menu” account… but i think im waffling now (do they do waffles as well ;))

i dont know about macs (i dont like macs is y! lol)

so… yer… to summarise… ifu wanna put it onto CD, do as wizard sez, ifu want it on bootup, (on windows anyway) just put it into the startup folder

Prophet.

Good point.

Thanks a lot peeps, its greatly apprieciated

a donut shop is going to use flat screens for a menu system? wow! a sign of the times. what size are the LCDs?

19 inch LCD’s, its more a less something they want to try and perhaps get an edge on the competition somehow. They just want some new fancy technology.

They just want some new fancy technology

lol is it a male owner by any chance?
any excuse 4 new technology! lol
why are us men so obsessed with fancy technology?? lol

Prophet.

lol yup that it is a male owner
