I think his strong point is undoubtedly marketing, and scoping. Heâd be an excellent creative director/design marketer/accounts manager.
One of the most interesting sites posted for a while IMO.
For me the most interesting aspect is his drawing ability. Going through the site it was clear that learning the skills to build say a website/logotype was very much secondary to genuine creative processes like drawing. That is what will really impress a prospective employer IMO.
He clearly has the ability to apply himself to different medium and so given time to gain different skill sets can probably do whatever he wants, although I would stop short of product design at the moment!
It will be interesting to see what he delivers when tackling a real life commercial brief. But congratulations Dave!
Thanks for all the great feedback everyone. I recently accepted a job with Frog Design in New York. It seems like the best personal fit and will hopefully be the first step towards a long, challenging professional life.

Wow that was truly a blast I havent just sat and clicked through a site in a long time. One thing i think Dave does that is so great is he makes everything about his site compelling. Even the portfolio reels are put together so well I want to watch the next one just to see what kind of music and effects he threw together. Excellent job A+.
Is it just me or is it getting quite old seeâing generic Adobe after effects eye candy? Impressive site otherwise.
Thats probably one of the most ignorant quotes I have heard in a while. Do you get sick of the CG quality of pixar movies cause they are used again and again. You say it like producing that kind of effect is easy in AE. Just like any program only people that are truly skilled with it can achieve that kind of quality.
Daves website has a lot of music that im sure is not licensed is that okay to do since these are just fictional projects or would you have to get a licence if your were using that music no matter what??

Frog are indeed a top company so congratulations. I only know of them for their product work, but if they are half as strong in digital then thats fantastic. If Im out in NY this July, that is one place I would love to stop by.
Beautiful and professional, yet I think the music makes it a bit too pompous⌠but maybe thatâs because I am not American :).
Itâs a good site and he has a lot of talent, but most of the After Effects he is using are in fact presets using the trapcode particular plugin.
So your comparison of movies is quite different than a 2 second effect.
Granted he has to use the plugin in a neat way, which he did for the most part. There are some things I would change, but if the site got him a job, then enough has been said.
The planning/marketing/concept was amazing. There wasnât anything about the design or the use of Flash that âwowedâ me. Doesnât look like much actionscript was involved as well.
Also dave said he worked on this for 2 years. 2 years is a long time which you would need to create something like this, no doubt.
I also agree with PR about the aftereffects.
Now with that said I am not taking anything away from Dave, Iâm sure he worked super hard on this. But the fact is there are tons of portfolioâs that are much more technically envolved with jobless creators, Dave just has a much better marketing scheme

@daveâs use of plugins - anyone that makes comments about his use of plugins had BETTER NEVER EVER use plugins themselves.
Thatâs a ridiculous statement. Thereâs good (appropriate, innovative) use of plugins, and perhaps not so good use of plugins.
Iâd tend to agree - the great thing about the site is not so much the design, and not so much the technical skills (things of which are fine to scrutinise, itâs kinda the whole idea of the kool sites sectionâŚ) - but the innovation of how he is presenting and reasoning his concepts. Heâs a great thinker and creative, but like the others, I donât think the site is an outstanding display of design or visual stimulation, by any means, and I think more agree but wonât join in. But it is bombastic as far as sites go, and pretty eye catching, either way ;).
The site is, more than anything, just the product of a hell of a lot of hard work.
Good on him for securing a place at frog.
Nowhere Iâm just pointing out that the Flash didnât amaze me, did it amaze you? If so maybe you should get around the net more.
And no I havenât used those plug ins before.
