What’s teh best technique for producing decorative bits that look like they grow, but each part looks like its independent. I guessing its masks and tweening?

Sorry for my weak explaination but I want to try and create some floral vines that grow and flower in a project I’m doing and what I have so far looks a little un natural and defiantly not as fluid as that demonstration in the above link.
suggestions please or even links to tutorials for this.
