Does a Computer Science Degree still Matter?

This is something that I have been thinking about for some time, and I got a chance to dive into this with someone who may know a lot about this topic

The part that is tricky is that I would argue that a formal CS degree never really mattered. We know a ton of people who are at the top of their game without ever getting anything close to a CS degree. What AI has done is is moved the needle further away from the “must need” column and closer to a “nice to have” bucket

Thoughts?

Kirupa, you’re right that a formal CS degree isn’t the only path to success in tech anymore. AI and abundant online resources have lowered barriers, making skills and problem-solving more critical than credentials. Still, for many, a degree offers structured fundamentals, networking, and signals commitment. So it’s less about “must have” and more about how you complement formal education with continuous learning and hands-on experience.
