External usage

I am in the very infant stages of developing a site in Flash and was wondering if I could get some sage advice on the direction I am taking. Basically, I am creating the largest files in flash and exporting them as .movs. I have a main .fla file that I am then importing these .movs as external .flv files in their respective scenes for the obvious reason of saving download time. Each scene would correspond to a button in the navigation bar. My question is this: Is this the best way to go about it? And, how universal would this method be. Keep in mind I am a Flash idiot who can’t figure out for the life of myself how to do a percentage preloader.
