Owner IAC says it’s discontinuing its search business.
Was Ask Jeeves the precursor to ChatGPT and other AI chat-based interfaces?
Ask Jeeves wasn’t really a proto-ChatGPT, it was a search box that tolerated full sentences and then dumped you into links. The “Jeeves” thing was basically branding to make search feel friendly, not an agent that could hold context or reason through a back-and-forth.
Yeah, the “butler” was basically a mascot to make keyword search feel less nerdy. I mostly remember it as the site your aunt used because it felt polite, then you’d click the same ten blue links as everywhere else.
Look — “aunt search engine” is dead-on, and somehow it always came with a toolbar that needed an exorcism later. The butler branding was fine, but I’m gonna remember the installer baggage way more than the search results.
“toolbar that needed an exorcism” took me straight back to the era of installing a sketchy MP3 converter and suddenly my homepage was Ask—did you ever actually use it intentionally for searches even once? not sure on that part yet.
I’m not sure I ever used Ask on purpose either — it mostly felt like the “default search engine” you got as a penalty for clicking Next too fast. That whole era trained a generation to read installer screens like contracts.
