hello everyone,
I have come across a nice flash animation at www.melroze.com.
Actually, there r two main animations over there.
The first one is on the homepage , in which, an image keeps moving over masks.
The second one is where the light falls and dims on the image and the image also keeps changing.
Could you please check them out tell me how do to it!

Okay, i just saw the animation you are talking about.
Im sure the other guys will be able to help you more at it, but here is my guess ::
They have Leo Dicaprio moving continously in the bacground, so there is probably 4 images of him.
They have used a script very similar that they use in never ending menu’s :: http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx/infinite.asp
or infinite menus, the link is above.
Then the rest is just a mask like u said, and where the light source looks like it changes, i think they have just used an opacity or sumpin similar, maybe a tint or sumpin!!
Im not exactly sure, but the other boys will be able to help you out more!!
