Globe? with buttons

Hello.
I’m not going to say I’m new, cos you can see: Posts:1.
Hello everyone. This seems to be a really nice forum.

My Problem:

I have a client who sells products worldwide. What he wants on his site is a rotating globe, with selectable countries and/or regions, which will give information about those areas and direct to new pages.

Firstly, I’m not too experienced at flash. I’m just a beginner really. Basic knowledge.

I’ve been looking around at some fla files for globes and the like. A lot of what I’ve found has been made up of individually drawn frames, with the buttons set in each frame.
I think with the amount of areas/countries required, the file size and time required would be too large for me to attempt anything like that. Also, my animation skills are pretty bad.

Has anyone got any ideas? I don’t think I’ve seen any real 3d objects with selectable buttons on them, everything I’ve seen has just been animated frames.
So far I’ve been working on a flat atlas map where the continents blow up in size to select individual countries and areas. If the worst come to the worst, I can probably pass him off on that.

Thanks in advance.

Also, whats up with my signature?
The height contraints in the html code don’t seem to be working? Am I missing something? It was published at its correct size, 260x60

The functionality your after just isn’t available in Flash without some SERIOUS frame work… forget it.

Tried director? Has built in support for 3D object.

Failing that you could go for some form of VRML but what I suggest you do is lead your client down a route to a more realistic solution!!

My boss asked me for something similar a while and I laughed at him…

You can see what I eventually gave him at: -

It’s still tacky as I haven’t finished the GFX yet but it’s all done in Flash MX. The only reason the file is so large is because of the background JPG’s (working on a vector version as we speak!) but there’s only 2 swf and they only have about 3 frames each…

Hope that helps a bit…

Thanks FlashJunky

Yeah, a flat map is probably the way to go. Emm… You can see an example of the kind of thing I’m doing at

Actually, thats an early messy version. and only asia is doing anything so far.
The file size is large as every country is an individually drawn graphic in very good detail. But it shouldn’t go too much larger as I can reuse the graphics.
I got the map from someone else’s fla file on flashkit. God knows how he got it, I dread to think of him drawing all those countries.

That link doesn’t seem to be working at the moment, I blame brinkster.

You win some, you lose some!

Good luck and don’t forget to post the final product here so I can get jealous :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks flashjunky.
Actually, this rather pointless post is just to see if my signature is working. Sorry.

looks ok to me…
