Help with 3d (maya)

hi all

i’m using the Maya PLE and i’ve encountered a problem. First, let me explain that i haven’t really had time to learn the program at all yet (it’s so huge! i’ve just tinkered round a bit)…

what i’m trying to do is make a series of walls that curve around (see pic)…

so i’ve drawn all the curves for the walls (kinda like the red lines in my example)… and they’re sitting flat on the X/Y axis. Now i want to sortof “extend” them vertically and make them into walls, but i dunno how…
i first tried by making cubes and squishing them so they were long flat wall things, but i couldn’t work out how to curve and shape them how i wanted…

i’m sure it’s not such a hard thing to do , but i really haven’t had time to learn it, and i can’t find a tutorial about it (it’s kindof obscure huh?)

any help would be appreciated
i hope i explained it well enough

Stuart

also, when using object snaps, is there a way to make it snap to the axis? because when i turn snap to grids on, it doesn’t actually snap to them how i would expect (i.e when i’m moving a line vertically, the ends don’t necessarily snap to the x/y axis…) hard to explain :stuck_out_tongue:

k i worked it out… i used the ‘loft’ command which hadn’t worked earlier, i must have had the settings wrong

now, i want to make a roof for the top… i’ve drawn an outline of the shape, and i just want to ‘fill’ the outline (as if i’d drawn a stroke in illustrator and want to give it a fill)

how can i do this?!?!

thanks a lot
stuart

Use splines. In 3ds Max they are shapes (line arch ect) and you just put an Extreude modifier onto them and it werks fine.

splines eh…? i’ll have to look into those (i’m a REAL n00b at this)… i got a satisfactory result by applying a ‘bevel plus’ modifier to the outline and just setting the height to reallllllllly small, and adding a cap which provided the roof.

thanks for the help anyway

Hey Stuart, so you want to create a room out of that shape? , you can create like you said the curves with lofts. and then use planar in the surface menu to create a cap over roof as you want.
