Pretty new to all this, have been trying to find a tutorial for this effect

the one where the picture breaks apart like sliding doors, have searched the internet tutorial sites for weeks and found nothing like it, yet it seems to be one of the most common effects out there

It is called masking. Search for tutorial on masking in flash on this site (there a bunch of varying kinds you can find here) or on the web.
