? home network question?

hey fellow kirupies

i have a desktop running windows XP Pro and a laptop running windows XP Media Center. they both use the same wireless access point(802.11B) to connect to the net. id like to transfer a bunch of files(~2 GB) from the desktop to the laptop. can i do this over the wirless connection that they use? how do i set this up? or should i just get a cable and connect them? how do i set this up?

thanks all

I’d say make a network connection using…cables. Don’t know if you can do it wirelessly. Never done it before.

Homework ?

do you know what type of cable? i’m not sure…

Maybe an Ethernet cable?
Just a guess…

Is this access point a router or hub?

If it is, the only thing you should have to check is that both pc and laptop are in the same workgroup, and that your firewall is off. If both of these are true, then it’s just a matter of giving the permissions necessary to do what you need.

As a side note, you are going to have to let that run overnight to copy 2gb of info over that wireless connection. It seems fast to you for the internet because the internet never requires the connection to slow down. So you see full speed all the time with it. With network pc-to-pc you are going to be S–L--O–W.

If your WAP is not a hub, using a cable is your only option. If you do not have a hub, you will need a crossover cable a little more knowledge of TCP/IP to get it to work.

You should be able to do it wirelessly you just have to se up a shared folder?

By right clicking and then go to sharing a security. Or go to the c: drive and right click that and click sharing. It will be faster to do it over cable than wirelessly if you want to do it with a cable you will need a crossover cable.

flash fool is correct, but you can’t do any of that without what I mentioned first.

You can do it over wireless, it’s just a matter of connecting to your other PC through network IPs and shared folders. However, you’re using 802.11b, which isn’t the fastest wireless connection, so expect to spend some time transferring the file.

I’d recommend just connecting using a crossover, as mentioned before, or even connecting through firewire or USB (?).

thanks everyone.

the box for the AP says ‘wireless access point router’. does this mean i cannot do it wirelessly? what should i do? whats my best option?

thanks again

how do i set both computers to the same workgroup? the laptop cannot see the desktop in ‘my network places’ now so i think this is the problem.

right click “my computer” select “Computer Name” then click the “Change” button…rename the domain to whatever you want, say for instance “DaCrew”

then do the same on the other computer naming the domain the same name, in this case “DaCrew”

both machines should be forced to reboot…

upon reboot make sure you have the guest account enabled - and then setup your folder shares to transfer the data to and from.
