How do buttons in a movieclip work?

Hey ladies and gents! you guys rock here at kirupa. why cant I get a button to work within a movie clip? I’m working a drop down menu that functions good, but how do I get it to tell it to go to a certain frame or label on my main timeline? I must be missing something simple I’m sure. anyone? many thanks in advance, Ron
