I need to rant for a second here

(please don’t mind the caps, i’m really aggravated…)

I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS, I’VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR A JOB SINCE I GOT OUT OF COLLEGE A GOOD MONTH AGO. I DECIDED TO REAPPLY AT MY OLD JOB FOR THIS INTERNET COMPANY IN WASHINGTON DC SO I DID. MY FRIEND WAS LOOKING FOR A JOB SO I RECOMMENDED THIS COMPANY. SO WE BOTH WENT IN AT THE SAME TIME; HE GOT INTERVIEWED AFTER I DID. GUESS WHO GOT THE JOB…HE DID!!! NOW I’M STILL UNEMPLOYED, MY FRIEND GOT A JOB OVER ME BECAUSE I TOLD HIM ABOUT IT, AND RIGHT NOW I’M REALLY PISSED OFF, AS YOU CAN UNDOUBTEDLY TELL.

Thank you for your time, i’m going to cool off in my freezer now.

Thats rough man.

Jump back on the horse dude, im sure you will find a great job. Just be patient.

maybe you should buy this

Dude. I’m on my 8.th month without steady employment. I read ya…

Goes to his own freezer

thor,

i applied to ten places and only got interviews at a couple of those places. they didn’t give me a job at one of them, i don’t know why. i had all the qualifications, even exceeded them, but i think my thing was that i’m very direct and i felt that the man interviewing me didn’t like my directness. i don’t know, it was just that kind of feeling.

at the second place i got an interview for the position of a freelance account coordinator at this advertising firm. i was interviewed by two very nice ladies. they called me into another interview where i took a spelling and grammar test and then they called me a couple days later and offered me that job.

i worked at that job for a month. then in this same advertising company, a new position for a web editor opened up. first i called the general manager/executive vp of the company and expressed an interest and asked for guidance to the person taking applications. he gave me the number and email of the interactive director. i wrote the interactive director, expressing an interest, giving him an overview of how many hours and when i could work (it’s a 30/per week job). he emailed me back and we set up an interview. i went in, had a good interview, was direct again and i even told him that i was leaving for a month for vacation in june. he respected my honesty in telling him at the first interview. then i asked him when he would call me in for the second interview. he seemed surprised that i would ask him that but then said “in a week or so”. i said i would be in touch and left. later i sent him an email thanking him for the interview and again telling him why i would be good for this position.

he called me in the second week, we had another interview and i left. then a week later, he called me into his office and asked me if i was ready to take on multiple projects, etc. to which i said yes and he’s like “i’m looking forward to working with you, congratulations!”

been here ever since january. it’s all about the extra effort. i know you’re trying hard, but you have to try even harder, especially with this 6.1% unemployment rate we have.

good luck.:stuck_out_tongue:

haha… I’m still looking for a job too… DC sucks for internet jobs…

…seriously. i wish i could move out to california for the summer.

But where are you looking for jobs? I’m having problems finding jobs just because I haven’t graduated yet…

hey thoriphes, thats really harsh man, yet amazingly selfless. Look at it this way:

1)you helped a friend, which makes you a great person.
2)chances are you will get a job thats better suited to you than that one would’ve have been. For all you know, you could’ve got that job, yet hated the people you worked with.

just a thought, i know it prob wont help though so all i can offer is my sympathy. :-\

Argh. Your frustration must be huge. Well, there’s nothing you can do about it now.

Keep this in mind: if you find a job which is better than this one (which you probably will), he will be the one frustrated he didn’t got that one. So be patient, who gets frustrated last, gets frustrated worst.

i really appreciate all you guys’ input. i’m definitely calmed out right now.

I have like this golden rule when applying to jobs

NEVER GO BACK TO AN OLD JOB

there i said it :beam:  just keep looking and like pink said show them how interested you are in having the position and you will get the job

definately never go back to an old job!

just remember why you quit in the first place!

well if this can´t cool you off, it will definitively calm me down:

I´m working for a company for the last 16 months, receiving the same crappy pay check, having more and more work to do (none of them i´m really proud of), with little or no artistic freedom at all, hating my bosses even more than i thought it could be possible, sending curriculums at weekly bases, with no replys…

i guess i´m stuck here :frowning:

here-here on the “Never go back to an old job” …

Unless the prior position was temporary, There’s too much room for awkward feelings no matter how pleasantly you left…

do the Monster.com thing - shoot for co’s in California if that’s what you want and if you get a bite … then move (?)

lol, you think the DC area sucks for web jobs, try Central New York! :stuck_out_tongue:

There are no jobs period. The city I’m in has about 35% unemployment (might be higher since I last heard)…

I’m sure yo get a better job than your friend. then you’ll be thanking god you didn’t get the current one!

apply everywhere. make copies of your resume, cover letter, and online portfolio (?) or put your work on a cd-rom (with your signature/watermark on them) and send them out everywhere. we have a family friend who is an engineer. he applied to 120 places across the U.S. and got a job in Seattle in Boeing. It pays off believe me.

well, i didn’t quit from my last job. i had to go to school :). k i just got off the phone with the guy who interviewed me and he said they didn’t have any work for me to do. to me that’s a good and bad thing:

bad, dammit i’m still outta work
good, at least i won’t just sit there all day doing jack.

nevertheless, i still need something to do. and to think from the two of us, my friend who got the job and me, i’m the computer engineer, he’s a linguistics major. ARGH!!!?!

oh well, back to searching for a job…

It will work out dude. You did a good thing by letting your friend know about the job - even if he got it and you didnt, things will even out in the end. Just do as everyone here has stated and keep pounding the pavement.

One word of advice, the reason I got the job I am at right now is because I had my own started up. They saw that I had the determination to do this stuff and how much I really loved it and that showed them I was going to be in it for the long run.
