why do my imported swf files show what’s outside of the document size when imported into a main swf? Shouldn’t they keep the size they were originally made? If not is there a way to ‘cut off the excess stuff’?

They’ll show stuff outside of the stage height and width if you are previewing it in flash. When you view the exported version it should show only what appears on the stage. This is so that designers can see what is happening to objects that are not immediately on the stage.
